Nuns and comedy is a tried-and-trued combination, going together as well as peanut butter and banana. Well, maybe not, but the success of musicals such as Nunsense and Sister Act have proven the mix to be enjoyable. For the most part, though, these productions keep things fairly chaste and respect the vow of celibacy and/or chastity that being a nun requires.
It’s important to get that out-of-the-way, as The Little Hours is about as raunchy as one can get.
Directed and written by Jeff Baena, The Little Hours follows a Medieval slave (played by Dave Franco) as he tries to hide from his abusive master in a nunnery. There, he meets the unhinged nuns and tries to keep his cover as a deaf-mute in order to keep them away from him.
The film boasts an all-star ensemble, with the nuns being played by
Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, and Kate Micucci. The Father of the nunnery is John C. Reilly (Chicago, Wreck-It Ralph), with Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, and Molly Shannon also appearing. The cast was praised in particular after its debut at Sundance earlier this year.
The Little Hours is rated R for nudity, sexual content, substance use, and language. Tickets and showtimes are available here or at the box office.
