OPENING APRIL 30, the Frick Art Museum exhibit Romare Bearden: Artist as Activist and Visionary celebrates a former East Liberty resident recognized as one of the most original visual artists of the 20th century.

Bearden (1911-88) graduated from Peabody High School in 1929; during the 1930s as a student at Lincoln University, Boston University and NYU, he began formal art studies and launched what would be a six-decade career depicting the vibrancy of African-American life and culture across a wide range of media — painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, collage and murals like his sprawling 1984 Pittsburgh Recollections at Gateway Center T Station.

The Frick show presents an eclectic array of collages, watercolors, limited edition prints, reproductions and rare archival material, including early magazine covers and editorial cartoons conveying an aesthetic Bearden once summarized as “You don’t paint what you see, you paint what you feel. My intention is to reveal through pictorial complexities the life I know.”

IT’S OFTEN EASY to overlook the natural world in our daily rounds, but Ashley Cecil’s Now You See Me exhibit at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden brings a sharp, penetrating focus to the multi-layered interplay of plants, animals and people — an interplay that seems to endanger as well as sustain.

Cecil says her recent natural science residencies at Tree Pittsburgh, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Phipps Conservatory and University of Pittsburgh’s Richards-Zawacki Herpetology Lab lifted a literal veil from her eyes. “I never walk in the woods with the same indifference again, now truly seeing the cycles and relationships. I also can’t unsee the fragility and loss due to our impact.”

The two dozen works in this exhibit blend acrylic and oil, wood, seed pods, linen, oxidized corten steel, gesso and laser cut paper. Truly unique are her “botanical portaits” — painted silhouettes of local ecologists and naturalists overlaid with patterns of a connected plant species.

Ticketed artist reception for Now You See Me is Friday, Apr. 8, from 6-9 p.m. at the PBG’s Zappala Woodland Room and Welcome Center.
