Located in the Dormont business district, the Hollywood Theater was first built-in 1925. After changing hands and closing its doors for renovations over the years, it became the independent movie house it’s known as in 2011. As a single-screen theater, it hosts second-run films, special events and limited engagements, and bi-monthly showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, complete with audience participation. In addition to showcasing the films of yesteryear and the lesser-known productions of today, their website boasts that it “is now the only theater in the Pittsburgh area with a theater organ.” There are performances on the theater organ throughout the year.

This week, the Hollywood Theater is hosting viewings of La La Land,  directed by Damien Chazelle. It follows the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress who works as a barista to the stars. She meets Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a jazz musician, and they immediately click. But their blossoming romance is threatened by success- as their dreams come closer to being reality, they are forced to decide between love and fame. La La Land has been nominated for twelve Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It is rated PG-13.

Dates and times can be viewed on the calendar here. Tickets are available at the box office (opens half an hour before showtime) and the Hollywood Theater’s website.
