Local Color: A Dye and Fabric Workshop featuring Rebecca Harrison

October 20, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join in for an afternoon focused on the magic of plants and color! Learn about the art of natural dye using locally available plants, including black walnut, goldenrod, and indigo. Participants will walk away with a variety of fiber samples, including a 20″ x 20″ square of cotton that can be used for future projects or as a scarf.

This workshop builds off of Rebecca’s residency show, Home Color.
Home Color explores the natural, man-made, and cultural color and textures of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The exhibition will feature an installation of a bedroom, connecting a personal “home” to a regional “home”, as well as the relationships between land, culture, individuals, and industry.

About the Artist
Rebecca Harrison is a fiber artist from Washington, Pa who uses natural dye, embroidery, sewing, watercolor, and knitting in her practice to create functional artifacts. Upon graduating with a BFA in Fibers in 2014, she moved to Pittsburgh where she has been making things and teaching people how to make things. Her work is inspired by relationships between people and land, particularly the extraction of natural resources in Washington County as well as the cultural changes in Pittsburgh. The themes in her work began as a manifestation of homesickness, experienced through both geographical distance and distance through time. These days, she uses her work as a way to ground herself in the present; locally sourced plant-based dyes are only available during certain times of the year, and staying in tune with a rapidly changing cultural landscape in the Pittsburgh region requires daily observation.
