Cambodian Rock Band: “Whoever Tells the Story, Tells the Truth”, Saturday, September 14 – October 6, City Theatre, 1300 Bingham Street.  Check out this production on its opening night.  Part play and part rock concert, the play features the surfer rock music of Cambodian band Dengue Fever. Tickets $15 – $36.

One Man Star Wars Trilogy, September 11 – 29, Greer Cabaret Theater, 655 Penn Avenue, Downtown.  May you find the force at this one-man re-telling of the iconic trilogy.  In the span of 60 minutes, Canadian actor Charles Ross will take you through all the epic battles and will single-handedly portray all the memorable characters.  Tickets for the cabaret-style, table seating are $31 – $56.25.

Amani Lewis: Subjective Native and Ben Jones: Resurgence – Rise Again, September 13 – December 15., The August Wilson African American Cultural Center, 980 Liberty Avenue, Downtown.  Opening Reception, Friday, September 13, 5 pm – 7 pm.  Amani Lewis uses her friends and family members as the subject matter for her mixed-media portraits, while New Jersey artist Ben Jones is inspired by African spiritualism and revolutionary struggles as the basis of his large scale pieces. Meet both artists, check out their works and enjoy light refreshments at Friday’s reception. Cash bar.

Festivals

3rd Annual Explore East Liberty Wine Festival, Saturday, September 14, 2 pm – 6 pm, Broad Street between Centre Avenue and North Highland Avenue.  Over a dozen local wineries will provide wine samples, with food trucks selling munchies and live music by OGWS band and The Moat Rats.  The $25 advance ticket ($30 at the door) gets you a wine glass, wine tote, and wine samples.

2019 Pittsburgh Chinese Culture Festival, Saturday, September 14, 11 am – 7 pm, Mellon Park, 6599 56th Avenue, Shadyside.  Explore Chinese culture through art, exhibits and food from some of Pittsburgh’s best Chinese restaurants at this festival hosted by the Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Center.

Fig Fest, Sunday, September 15, 2 pm – 5 pm, Wigle Barrelhouse & Whiskey Garden, 1055 Spring Garden Avenue.  Here’s a festival devoted to the lovely, earthy, sensuous fig.  Learn about and taste all things figgy; including gardening and cooking demonstrations (olive curing, wine making, mozzarella making) an heirloom seed and fig tree exchange, fig-centric Italian treats, custom fig cocktails, accompanied by traditional Italian music and dancing.  Proceeds from the event benefit the Italian Garden Project, which is dedicated to preserving,  documenting and celebrating immigrant gardening traditions. Tickets (available at www.wiglewhiskey.com) are $35 and include all festivities, samples and a complimentary Wigle cocktail.

Community

2019 Pittsburgh Urban Farm Tour, Saturday, September 14, 10 am – 5 pm.  This tour is the perfect way to welcome the autumn harvest!  This self-guided tour will showcase eleven small farms and community gardens, such as Shiloh Farms, Duquesne Community Victory Garden and Burgh Bees Apiary.  The event, coordinated by The East End Food Coop, Pittsburgh Food Policy Council and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture,will give participants a behind the scenes look at all that is involved in growing food while being mindful of our environment.  Tickets are $15 and available at the Coop website, under 12 yrs. are free.

 

Annual Community Mutt Strut, Saturday, September 14, 10 am – 1 pm, The Frick Art and Historical Center, 7227 Reynolds Street, Point Breeze.  Grab your furry friend, take a walk in the park and help a worthy cause.  This annual event features a dog parade with prizes, food, music and vendors.  Sponsors, PNC and Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, use proceeds to train service dogs for veterans struggling with PTSD and other combat-related injuries.

Andrew Bird: “My Finest Work Yet” w/ Chicano Batman, Friday, September 13, 8 pm, Roxian Theatre, 425 Chartiers Avenue, McKees Rocks. Tickets $39.50 – $46.00.  Andrew Bird brings his unique style of indie rock to the ‘Burgh blending his folksy guitar, violin and trademark whistling.
