Movie Mondays: “Donnie Darko” and “1984” At The Hollywood

The Hollywood Theater is known for its one-night events and limited showings. From anime films to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, nothing is shown on the screen for long. This week two classics are being shown for a special run: a 4K restoration of the 20o1 film Donnie Darko and the ever-timely 1984.

Donnie Darko stars Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular character, a young man who is haunted by images of a large man in rabbit costume, preaching that Doomsday is fast approaching. The film was nearly released straight-to-video, but received a limited run and was adored by critics. The soundtrack includes the Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World,” which has also become a cultural touchstone.

1984, starring John Hurt, was released the same year as the title and is based on the novel by George Orwell. It takes place in a dystopian alternate timeline where all media and even thought is controlled by the government, the face of which is the enigmatic Big Brother. In recent years, the book and film have been considered to be almost prophetic, as the world it depicts seem to mirror our own reality. Famed critic Roger Ebert gave the film 3.5 stars out of five.
