Movie Mondays: “Sound of Music” and “Omega Man” at The Oaks

After renovations beginning in August 2014, The Oaks theater in Oakmont transformed from a single-screen movie house to a live venue, independent cinema, and part-time bistro. Originally built in 1938, The Oaks was the epitome of art deco and luxury. Unfortunately, in the 80s it was reduced to a second-run theater, but was bought by Oakmont locals and has been going through a revival since 2002. This updated version keeps the classic style and charm, while also bringing in some modern flairs. Gold leaf (oak leaves, naturally) line the walls. Popcorn and other traditional movie snacks can be bought alongside an assortment of wraps and rolls.

This week, The Oaks hosts a plethora of special events, including a screening of The Omega Man and a Cinebrunch showing of The Sound of Music. Part of their “Dystopian Tuesdays” lineup, The Omega Man is a 1971 adaptation of the book I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. It stars Charlton Heston. The Sound of Music stars Julia Roberts as Maria, a nun who becomes the nanny of the Von Trapp children. It is based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical of the same name.

Showtimes and tickets are available on The Oaks website here. Cinebrunch tickets are limited, but movie-only tickets (no brunch included) can be bought at the box office day-of.
