Beat the Cold and Warm Some Hearts

An unseasonable heat wave has come to Pittsburgh this year but there’s no doubt that the Winter chill is just around the corner. For most of us the next two months will be full of holiday dinners, family get togethers, and Winter fun. But it’s important to remember that this time of the year can often be the most difficult for those not as fortunate as others. So start off the holiday season right by lending a hand to those in your community who need it most. We’ve compiled a list of some organizations around Pittsburgh that need extra help as the temperatures start to drop. Tis the season for giving.

Project Bundle Up

For almost 30 years, Project Bundle Up has been providing outerwear for disadvantaged children and seniors throughout Western Pennsylvania. Each year, over 5,800 individuals benefit from this organization’s efforts. But Project Bundle Up still struggles to bring warm coats to all of those in need. With a plethora of volunteer and donation options on their website, Project Bundle Up is one of the easiest ways to help your community this season.

Jubilee Soup Kitchen

Jubilee opened their doors in 1979 and has been a vital community program ever since. The kitchen is open 365 days a year and is always in need of volunteers to help prepare hot meals. The center also offers a food pantry in Polish Hill, childcare and employment services as well as health care referral services. To find out more about how you can get involved click here.

Snow Angels

If you’re looking for a volunteer opportunity that will help you get out of the house this Winter, look no further than Snow Angels. This program is open to anyone living in Allegheny County who wants to assist elderly and disabled individuals with snow removal. Something as minimal as one cleared sidewalk during the icy Winter months can make a world of difference for those who are unable to do the snow removal on their own. This is a great program for families looking to volunteer together and take the stress out of hazardous weather for those most affected by it. Click here for more details.

Angel Emporium

Angel Emporium is an organization dedicated to making the holidays a special time despite economic standing. All gifts donated to them are put into a free store specifically for shoppers without the means to buy gifts this season. If you’re looking for a way to get your office or workplace into the giving side of the holidays try organizing a gift drive for Angel Emporium this year. Or come down to their center and volunteer as an on-site gift wrapper. For gift suggestions click here.
