Polish Hill Arts Festival
Vintage Grand Prix, Friday – Sunday, July 19-21, Schenley Park, Oakland. The sound of engines reving will fill Schenley Park and the surrounding area this weekend. Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. is the “Forbes Avenue of Speed” race car parade through the Squirrel Hill business district. After the parade, race cars will park on Forbes Avenue between Shady Avenue and Murray Avenue for spectators to get up close views of the cars and meet drivers/owners until 8:30 pm. Saturday and Sunday is Schenley Park Race Weekend from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Vintage street racers will speed along a 2.33 mile course with 22 turn and 11 elevation changes adding to the racing excitement and driving challenges. The best spot to view races is from the Bob O’Connor Golf Course, which is also the site of the International Car Show. For a full list of race times, food vendors and events, go to www.pvgp.org. A car of special interest on display this year is Pittsburgh Pirate legend Roberto Clemente’s 1972 Dodge Charger awarded to Clemente as MVP of the 1971 World Series. Proceeds from the event benefit autistic, and intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals.
12th Annual Polish Hill Arts Fest, Sunday, July 21, 12 pm – 8 pm, Brereton and Dobson Streets. Enjoy a Sunday afternoon on Polish Hill shopping the works of artisans and grooving to live music and other performances, including Pittsburgh’s Poetess Rachael Ann Bovier. Food vendors, such as Black Sheep BBQ and Onion Maiden, will be on hand to satisfy your hunger. If you’re lucky, you may even find some authentic Polish deliquesce. Pierogis anyone?!

Wordplay, Friday and Saturday, July 19 & 20, 7:30 pm, Bricolage, 937 Liberty Avenue. While a DJ spins the soundtrack, gain an intimate look into the lives of strangers when they share stories from their lives. A happy hour with free drinks starts the evening at 7:30 pm, followed by the show at 8 pm. Tickets are $25
Kurt Vile, Sunday, July 21, 7:30 pm, Hartwood Acres, 4000 Middle Road, Allison Park. This concert, by laid-back guitarist/singer Kurt Vile, is part of the Allegheny County Concert Series. Cate Le Bon will open the night of music. Grab a picnic blanket or a folding chair and chill out on Sunday night before the start of a new work week. Free.
Sodajerk the Reunion, Saturday, July 20, 8 pm, Thunderbird Cafe & Music Hall, 4053 Butler Street, Lawrenceville. Pittsburgh and Atlanta band members, who have been recording music since 1999, get together to play what some say is a mix of the sound of The Replacements with a bit of Johnny Cash thrown in. Tickets are $12.
