Pittsburgh’s Newest Veterinary Clinic Offers Mobile Services

For the last twenty years, Dr. Michael Meneo has been working with pets. His wife, technician Amanda Abel, has been working with pets for about the same amount of time. One thing that they both noticed was that when pets came into their clinics, they tended to freak out. Big dogs tried to run away. Cranky cats extended their claws. So in early April, Dr. Meneo opened Pittsburgh Mobile Veterinary Services, a veritable clinic on wheels.

Unlike traditional vets who might pay house calls, Dr. Meneo’s van allows him the full capabilities of a brick-and-mortar facility, which include—but aren’t limited to—lab services, vaccinations, surgery, X-ray, dental X-ray, blood work, dental cleaning, and after-hours emergency calls. The only services that Dr. Meneo can’t provide from inside the truck are long-term hospitalization and ultrasound.

“We can come right to your driveway, assuming you don’t live on one of those super narrow Pittsburgh roads,” Dr. Meneo says. In these early days of his business, he put a pin in the center of Pittsburgh and drew a radius of about twenty-five miles. His coverage includes downtown, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, Shadyside, East Liberty, Squirrel Hill, Greenfield, Mt. Washington, Beechview, Brookline, Hays, New Homestead, Fineview, Crafton Heights, and Troy Hill.

“We had a dog that came into the clinic and was so stressed that he collapsed,” Dr. Meneo says, referring to an old brick-and-mortar clinic where he used to work. “With the mobile clinic, we were able to draw blood and give vaccines without a problem.”

Dr. Meneo isn’t the only mobile veterinarian in town—Dr. David Ruble and Dr. Melissa Battaglia run Vet To Pet, another mobile clinic—but his services help make Pittsburgh an even better place for pet owners. And in just another example of Pittsburghers helping Pittsburghers, Vet To Pet even referred some of their clients to Dr. Meneo’s new operation.

Typically, a brick-and-mortar clinic might charge $55 for an examination while Dr. Meneo charges $100. However, new customers get $25 dollars off, seniors save 10 percent, and veterans save 20 percent. The extra costs weigh against the convenience of a veterinary clinic that comes to your door, though for certain skittish or ornery pets, the cost is well worth it. Additionally, because Dr. Meneo comes to your home specifically to care for your pet, he’s able to give more focused care than a doctor who might need to run into another examination or operating room.

Currently, the team includes Dr. Meneo, his wife, and technician Ali Latus, who’d previously worked with Dr. Meneo at a brick-and-mortar clinic and was first on his list when he thought about opening the mobile clinic. Appointments run Monday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and Sundays for emergencies only.
