Get Ready for 2017’s Style Week Pittsburgh

The city of Pittsburgh isn’t afraid to get creative, take chances, and produce new opportunities. With that being said, this month marks the fifth consecutive year for Style Week Pittsburgh. The four-day fashion and networking event, created by Wadria Taylor, will take place starting on August 17 with the first of five events of 2017’s theme “Style meets Innovation.”

Working as an event producer and creating fashion-oriented productions, Taylor founded the first Style Week in August 2013. The event originally started as an idea in April 2013, when Taylor was visiting her homeland of Jamaica and heard of a Kingston Style Week.

“I had never heard of the event, so I googled it on my iPad and saw Style Week was all over the world,” Taylor said.

That’s when Taylor knew she had it bring it to Pittsburgh. And Style Week is more than just fashion shows; it’s a platform to showcase diversity, engage talents, and network.

“Pittsburgh is still finding its place in a sense,” said Taylor. “It’s a very unique city that is transforming to stomping grounds for tech companies, so that’s one of the reasons why this year’s theme is about innovation.” 

“Metamorphosis” is the opening fashion show showcasing local designers Gerry Florida, S. Moye’ Fashions, Lana Neumeyer, and Elaine Healy.

The 2017 Style Awards continue on Friday, August 18 at Alloy 26 starting at 6:30 p.m. More than 20,000 votes were cast this year.

Two events will take place on Saturday, August 19. First, you can enjoy a day of shopping with a pop-up market at The Ace Hotel from noon to 4 p.m. This free event invites you to shop from local vendors specializing in art, fashion, jewelry, accessories, and more. Later that night, take refuge at The Ace Hotel for “Fashion’s Night Out,” where you can enjoy performances by Sonji as well as Brett Staggs & The Daylight Moon.

The final event, “Industry Brunch,” will be hosted at The Frick Museum, Sunday, August 20 from noon to 3 p.m. The brunch includes great conversation with a diverse group of Pittsburgh creatives, innovators. There’s also an exclusive studio tour of current exhibition, ‘Irving Penn: Beyond  Beauty.’ Cocktails from Maggie’s Farm Rum while be served. Hello, mimosas!
