The Hungry Grl Hit List: Weekly Edition

Hey yinz! It’s your favorite Hungry Grl coming at you with a new series where I round up my favorite spots from the week and let you know about ‘em. From coffee shops to where to find the best fish fry this lent and, your Hungry Grl is on the prowl for the best dishes around the city.

Carson Street Deli  Location: E Carson St., South Side

Now that I reside in the South Side, I’m taking advantage of all of the eats that never seem to get enough credit (to everyone’s disbelief, there is more to East Carson than the “college bars”). I’ve been a Carson Street Deli & Craft Beer fan since my Pitt days, and I’ve been made to feel like an old friend every time I’ve walked in since. They have a wide array of classic and eccentric sammies, but last week I opted to make my own (I was being too indecisive for my own good).

Emerson’s Location: Market Square, Downtown

The hottest new spot to grab some after-work or pre-dinner happy hour cocktails. The space looks straight out of a trendy (and welcoming) NYC hotel, equipped with leather chairs and a roaring fireplace. Plus, they slay the charcuterie game.

The Speckled Egg. Location: Union Trust Building, Downtown

With breakfast served all day, this is an ideal meeting spot or place to fuel up for a busy day/evening. The decor is welcoming yet modern, and I’m a big fan of the couch-like seats in the windows. They have go-to’s like a simple avocado toast or brown butter french toast, as well as happy hour specials.

Pizzeria Davide Location: Penn Ave., Strip District

Following both Pizzeria Davide and DiAnoia’s closely on Instagram, I usually always up-to-date on their specials. So, when both spots posted about their fish sandwiches, I knew I had to hit them up (fun fact: I’m trying to hit up a different lent special all lent). I wanted to eat like 5 of these sandwiches in one sitting, that’s how good they are.

Brothmonger Location: North Side

When I tell people that I order soup on Instagram, I can always tell who the real friends are, because they’re never surprised by that fact. Meet Sarah, aka Brothmonger on IG, who sells weekly soups through her Instagram page. Though it’s almost impossible to snag her soups, I lucked out this week with cabbage, potato, and kielbasa soup, which was DELICIOUS.

Streets On Carson Location: East Carson Street, South Side

I don’t want to spill too many deets here because Matt will be featured in our next print issue, but I finally tried Streets On Carson’s infamous wings and I went to bed dreaming about them. Catch them on the fly all year long.

Rockaway Pizzeria Location: Lincoln Way, White Oak

When it’s Saturday and the queen of pizza calls me for a pizza night, you don’t say no. I tried a few slices from Rockaway Pizzeria and I was so glad I took a slice home after the pizza party dispersed. I highly recommend their pie topped with ricotta, honey, and pepperoni.

Totin’s Diner Location: Perry Highway, Wexford

After an appointment outside of the city, I stopped by Totin’s Diner for the first time and immediately was fixated by the gas station decor and vintage vinyl seats. I was also even more impressed after ordering their reuben and wanting to order a separate side of fries.

What are some new spots that you tried this week? Let me know what I should keep an eye on at hungrygrlbigcity@gmail.com!

Hungry Jess

Born and raised in New Jersey, I have always understood the importance of an ideal pizza toppings to crust ratio and how to spot an amazing bagel from one that tastes like cardboard. I've also endlessly debated the "gravy or sauce" question and joined in many traditional 'Sunday Dinners.' But at the end of the day, I'm just a girl that likes to eat and tell other people about it. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, came back to NYC, and have since returned to the 412, I have also developed my journalistic skills for both my website and outside publications as well as creating a newsletter that I can call my own.
