Croissants at Cafe Raymond

The Strip District is filled with dozens of gems, but one of my favorites along Penn Avenue is Cafe Raymond.  Located across from the yinzer-joint Lefty’s, Cafe Raymond serves up American classics every day until 3pm.

Owner and Pittsburgh native Raymond Mikesell started his craft at The Breadworks and studied the art of baking in France before returning back to Pittsburgh and opening Cafe Raymond. Thanks to his hard work and dedication, we now can reap the benefits of his experience. 

Covered in wood paneling from the walls to the tables, the vibe takes you to a cozy summer camp cabin feel. It’s time to forget your worries, put your cell phone away (note the “No Wifi, Free Zone” sign) and enjoy breakfast before archery class, arts, and crafts, work or whatever. 

Serving up breakfast all day, Raymond’s offers a variety of croissant sandwiches, pancakes and omelets. I tend to enjoy a balance of savory and sweet so I placed an order for the French toast and bacon, egg and cheddar croissant sandwich. Orders are taken at the front counter where you have a plethora of beverage options and are given a number for your meal. 

Call me old school, but I like to save my sweets for last, so I cut in half the breakfast sando first. Served on a light, fluffy and massive croissant, the sandwich was delicious and paired well with potatoes. Moving onto the French toast – each slice was thick, fresh and smothered in blueberries swimming in a sweet strawberry compote and topped with whipped cream. If you’re looking for a filling breakfast, this one “takes the toast.” 

The temperature was a little low for outdoor dining, but when the weather rises above 60 degrees, I recommend enjoying your meal on their adorable second-floor patio overlooking the bustling strip.

In addition to breakfast items, Cafe Raymond also offers a wide range of burgers, salads and signature sandwiches. Another fantastic lunch option is their Brown Bag Special that features any one of their gourmet sandwiches, daily side or chips, cookie, and a beverage for under $14.00.
