Want to get a closer look at Pittsburgh’s theatre scene? Join City Theatre for what promises to be one of the biggest events of the Summer. Bingham Street will be completely closed down for this year’s Backstage Block Party. Get a behind the scenes tour and a sneak peak of the upcoming season of premieres. All attendees will enjoy interactive games, great local food and brews and a photo booth complete with City’s own costumes and props. And did we mention this event is totally free?
The City Theatre will be sharing their 2015-2016 season lineup with all patrons by ending each tour with live previews from upcoming shows. The 41st season will include local performers as well as five Pittsburgh premieres and one world premiere. Some of the plays to look forward to include Dominique Morisseau’s Sunset Baby and Laura Eason’s Sex with Strangers.
Once known as City Players, the company was originally founded in 1975 as a group that toured throughout the Pittsburgh region, performing everywhere from parks to housing projects. City Theatre was offered a residency with University of Pittsburgh in 1979 but didn’t find their official home at the former Bingham Methodist Church until 1991.
This new chapter for the theatre began with a performance of Bricklayers by Elvira DiPaolo. For more than 40 years City Theatre has been bringing both original and classic works to the stage, including MOMENTUM, an annual festival that highlights new plays each performed on different stages.
City Theatre’s Backstage Block Party will take place on Saturday, September 12th from 1-4pm. Penn Pilsner and Penn Ginger Beer will be provided by Penn Brewery. Mission Mahi, PGH Halal Truck and Sugar and Spice will be at the event to provide an impressive spread of local eats for all in attendance.
